How it works
From the first song to the moment they press play.
Making a TapeHeart tape takes a few minutes or a few evenings, it's up to you. Here's the whole journey, in five parts.
Never owned a cassette?
Here's all you need to know.
A tape has two sides. Side A plays first. When it ends, you flip to Side B. Each side only holds so much music, so you choose carefully. That's what made tapes personal.
1 · Create
Choose the songs. Put them in order.
Start with a person, not a playlist. Then search Apple Music and build each side. Every song appears as a stripe as long as the song, so you can see how the side flows.
- 01Tap the red Record button and choose who it's for.
- 02Pick a length: 23, 30 or 45 minutes a side.
- 03Search Apple Music or your library and add songs.
- 04Drag the stripes into the order you want.
- 05Tap ✎ on any song to leave a note for that moment.
2 · Customize
Design the cassette.
Choose the shell, label and case, and write on the tape's card. The reels are wound with your songs' colors, so the finished tape looks like no one else's.
- 01Shell: smoke, clear, chalk and bold colors.
- 02Label and card: what you write is what they'll see first.
- 03Case: the last thing around it before it goes.
3 · Send
Tie it up and send it.
When it's ready, TapeHeart ties your tape into a heart in its own colors. Send it as a link in Messages or any app you use to talk to them.
- 01Read it over one more time: tracklist, notes, card.
- 02Tap "Tie it up & give".
- 03Choose how to send the link.
4 · Receive
Open it slowly.
The person you made it for sees their name and your heart, tied up. They pull the ribbon to untie it, the card unfolds with your note and the tracklist, and Side A begins.
Prefer less motion? With Reduce Motion on, a simple "Open" button does the same thing.
5 · Listen
Listen in order, with them beside you.
Tapes play the way they were made: start to finish, no shuffle. The player takes on each song's color, and your notes appear at the songs you wrote them for.
- A1Hold the arrows to scan through a song, like fast-forwarding a tape.
- A2Notes appear when their song plays and can be read aloud by VoiceOver.
- B1When Side A ends, flip to Side B.
